NOTMAN MOTOR GROUP DEVELOPMENTS

At a time when some businesses are struggling, Notman Motor Group is bucking the trend, with an exciting major renovation underway, as well as expansion with the addition of two innovative brands to their representation.

It’s business as usual at Notman Motor Group, Carlyle Street.

Their renovation at 88 Carlyle Street will deliver a beautiful modern space and a comfortable customer experience across both sales and service.  This will include a refreshed showroom and customer environment, a redesigned Service Reception area, and improved heating and year-round comfort throughout the dealership.

While the transformation takes place, every part of the business is continuing without interruption, with Sales, Service and Parts teams fully operational and ready to help.  

Dealer Principal Mark Notman says he is proud of the adaptability his team is showing, “Right now the team needs to work so flexibly. I really appreciate the efforts everyone is making to keep things ticking over.” 

The project is scheduled to be completed by summer, and the team is looking forward to welcoming customers into the finished space.

New GAC and XPENG Showroom.

Notman Motor Group opened a new yard and showroom in July 2026 to showcase two exciting brands – GAC, and XPENG.   This is conveniently located just a stone’s throw from their original site, at 20 Owen Street, Napier.   

GAC (Guangzhou Automobile Group), China’s fifth-largest vehicle manufacturer, officially launched in New Zealand in early 2026, joining other major Chinese brands with a focus on smart technology, efficiency, and competitive pricing.  GAC brings a range of competitively priced petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles including compact and mid-sized SUVs, urban EVs and a luxury 7-seat plug-in hybrid (PHEV) people mover.  

XPENG, a factory-backed electric vehicle brand, officially entered the New Zealand market in early 2026.   XPENG carries a focus on high performance electric vehicles, AI-driven technology and luxury passenger experiences.   The current vehicle lineup in New Zealand includes the coupe style G6 SUV and the X9, an ultra-intelligent luxury 7-seater people mover.  Brand followers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of further models in late 2026.

HISTORY

In 2014 Mark Notman and his young family made the big move from Christchurch to Napier taking on the opportunity to run the Hawkes Bay Honda franchise.  Mark had previous experience in the automotive industry  both within New Zealand and abroad. With this wealth of knowledge and sheer determination, Mark took a leap of faith and turned the Honda dealership into one of the leading regional branches.

Early in 2016 Notman Motor Group saw a gap in their fleet and took on KGM (previously SsangYong) and LDV, bringing the addition of trade and commercial vehicles to complement the Honda brand.

Amidst the upheaval of the Covid epidemic, the business won Honda’s National Dealer of the Year trophy in 2020, a huge achievement for the Napier franchise that was up against the country’s big-city dealerships.

2024 saw Notman Motor Group diversify further with the introduction of Omoda Jaecoo, one of the fastest growing motor vehicles brands world wide.  Omoda Jaecoo sits under the Chery group and brings a range of crossover and off-road styled SUVs to the New Zealand market.  They offer petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles bringing drivers luxury without the European price tag.

“It starts with being made a coffee when you walk through the door and when you buy a car from us you leave as part of the family,” he said. “We always say ‘if you’re driving past, pop in for a coffee’ and a lot of people do and are our friends now. They’ll just pop in when they have a moment.”

Mark says it is important to him that relationships are maintained through after-sales servicing, and that sees a lot of repeat customers coming through the doors.
